How does Private Tutoring with me work? Here is what you should know.
My Beliefs
Some of my fundamental beliefs:
Everything is learnable. Any skill can be built, irrespective of who we are and what our background is.
We learn better when we enjoy what we are learning.
Nothing comes easy. If we want spectacular results, we have to do the work to deserve it. There is no substitute for hard work.
Consistent daily work beats sporadic bursts of work, always.
If we are too obsessed about getting a result (the output), it is harder to achieve it. It is usually better to focus on the inputs - we are more likely to achieve the desired output this way.
My (personal) beliefs about the GMAT:
The GMAT is an extremely well-designed test that is designed to measure one's proficiency in certain skills business schools find relevant.
These skills include: reading, reasoning, data analysis, quantitative aptitude.
It helps greatly with securing an admit to business schools and with scholarships.
That said, the GMAT is just an aptitude test. While a great GMAT score is usually the end result of a ton of effort (sweat, blood, tears!!) and should be celebrated, it is also important to remember that
The GMAT is not a measure of one's intelligence (my deeply personal take!).
Not doing well on the GMAT doesn't make one "not good enough to do well in business schools and corporate".
Real life problem-solving and decision making is seldom done in a 2-3 minutes/problem situation.
Even a well-designed test such as the GMAT cannot predict your abilities that perfectly. My personal belief is that no "standardized" test can really determine one's genius that well.
So, never let a standardized test determine your self-worth.
The GMAT is not an easy test (for most). Typically, it requires a lot of consistent effort in the right direction. But it is also not rocket science - I believe that everyone is capable of achieving their target scores.
My Approach to GMATPrep
Focus on Skill-Building
My central priority is to help you build the needed skills (usually identified from the above diagnosis). For instance: translation and visualization skills for better comprehension; solutioning/ability to find path-to-solve (Quant/DI), ability to process the data-set optimally (DI), etc. No hacks/shortcuts.
Focus on Diagnosis
It is important to uncover the underlying issues which cause you to make errors. As a private tutor, I try to arrive at the root cause. This means that I will ask you a lot of questions, going deep into every step of how you solved a question. While this level of depth may be slow and even painful (sometimes!), it is necessary.
Focus on Processes
One of my tasks as a tutor is to try and ensure that you have good processes in place for every type of question the GMAT can throw at you. Through our sessions, we will focus not only on building skills (and fixing any concept-gaps), but also on inculcating solid systems that should work well for you on test-day.
Focus on Structure
Whether it is a set of corrective actions to fix an issue identified, or it is an overall study plan to get you to the finish line, I follow a structured and logical approach to solving the various problems pertaining to your preparation.
Focus on Guidance
My objective is to do everything I can to help you ace the GMAT. As much as is possible, I ensure that I am available on channels like WhatsApp - handling doubts, providing guidance, providing a patient and non-judgmental ear, etc. - beyond the sessions that we do.
